According to legend, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was born in the waves breaking on the coast of the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus. A bit of legend, coupled with the sunny climate and beautiful setting, makes Cyprus a perfect location for a wedding. I love a wedding abroad, having had my own wedding in Italy, so when Kirsty & Ben asked me to photograph their Cyprus wedding I jumped at the chance.
They were married at Aphrodite Hills Resort on the outskirts of Paphos, a place where they had previously enjoyed holidays together with friends and family. The luxurious resort is set on the rocky coastline near to Petra Tou Rominou (Aphrodite’s Rock), surrounded by golf course and lush Mediterranean landscaping and overlooks the sparkling blue sea. A big group travelled from the UK for their wedding and it was a great place for everyone to enjoy a holiday. Jeff and I spent a few days out there exploring the Island and were welcomed to the group on the eve of the wedding with a traditional Cypriot Mezze in a hillside taverna.
The day of the wedding was a typical Cyprus scorcher, with clear blue skies and blazing sunshine. I joined Kirsty at her mum’s villa, for a relaxed morning getting ready with her family and the bridesmaids. The wedding was held on the terrace of the hotel and Kirsty and Ben were married in a beautiful open air ceremony. A relaxed drinks reception was held on the sunset terrace and as the sun slipped below the horizon the group transferred to the golf club, which was decorated with seashells, driftwood and lit by candles in hurricane lanterns. Everyone tucked into the amazing Mediterranean buffet, and danced under the stars on the warm summer evening.
One of the things I love the most about photographing weddings is that I get to meet some fun and lovely people. Ben & Kirsty were so welcoming to my husband and I, and we spent several days in their company celebrating with them and their closest friends and family in this beautiful place, and can see they are very much in love and so suited to each other. We really wish you guys the very best, and thank you for making ‘working’ so easy and enjoyable.

Last week was my 2nd wedding anniversary so I thought I would share some pictures from my own wedding.
Jeff and I didn’t want a traditional English wedding so we decided to have our wedding abroad. We flew out with 16 of our close friends and family and got married in Malcesine, a pretty village on Lake Garda in Italy. The ceremony was held on the terrace of the medieval Malcesine castle perched on the rocky lake shore. It was so beautiful looking out over the blue lake and mountains, with the terracotta roofs and windy streets of the village below. After the civil ceremony we walked through the cobbled streets and boarded our private boat for a champagne cruise on the lake. We spent our evening at the lakeside, eating, drinking and laughing, enjoying a scrummy 7 course Italian feast and plenty of wine.
A wedding abroad is not for everyone, but if you want to do something different to the big family do then I cannot recommend it enough. The setting, the weather, the food and drink, are all so amazing. The whole week we were at Lake Garda was a celebration and a really great holiday. (Jeff maintains the best day was in fact speed boat day, not the wedding)
Our photos were taken by Gwen at Lake Garda Weddings, who were excellent in organising the whole wedding for us (another recommendation there). Such a great place for wedding photos too, I would love to go back and photograph a wedding in Malcesine (ps- I you are getting married in Lake Garda and want an English Photographer who knows the location then get in touch for a great rate!)
One of the main reasons for getting married abroad is to have your wedding in an amazing location, whether its a beach on the Mediterranean, a vineyard in Tuscany or a chic city break in Paris. Add the climate, the food, the wine and the culture and your wedding abroad will be a unique and memorable occasion. With all that gorgeousness going on you don’t have to compromise on your wedding photography- just take your wedding photographer with you!

“We got married in Cyprus in September 2012 and asked Amy to come and photograph our big day. Amy did our engagement photo’s beforehand which we were really happy with, and we felt much more comfortable taking a UK photographer that we’d already had experience with. The photos were absolutely amazing and captured the day perfectly. What we loved the most about Amy’s photo’s was that she really adapts her style of photography dependent on the bride and grooms personality. We had heard about ‘Cherish the dress’ shoots and Amy helped us to make this happen the day after the wedding. We were able to use a local beach which made for beautiful scenery and Amy’s eye for detail produced some gorgeous photographs. Thank you again Amy for helping us to capture such wonderful memories! “- Kirsty & Ben, married in Paphos in Cyprus
